Vineland was laid out on a grid in 1861 as a planned temperance and agricultural colony, and the resulting housing is unusually varied for a South Jersey city. The older sections along Landis Avenue hold Victorian and early twentieth century houses with heart pine and narrow oak flooring, much of it never professionally refinished. Surrounding the core, Vineland's enormous land area includes farmhouses, postwar development and newer subdivisions. Because property values here have stayed moderate, a great deal of original flooring survived that would have been replaced in a more expensive market, and owners restoring these houses are frequently working to a budget where refinishing rather than replacing is the deciding factor.
