Local Knowledge

Hardwood Floors in Newport's Homes

Newport predates most of the county around it, chartered in 1735 when the Christina River still carried real commerce. What survives is a tight grid of nineteenth-century twins and rowhouses along Market, Justis, and Ayre streets, many with heart pine or early oak laid before power tools existed. These are the floors most vulnerable to aggressive sanding, since a century and a half of wear has already taken thickness that cannot be replaced. Newer sections toward Boxwood Road and the Route 141 corridor were built for DuPont and General Motors workers in the 1940s and 1950s and carry conventional strip oak, frequently in excellent shape under carpet. At five miles out, Newport is effectively our home turf.

Common Questions

FAQ — Floor Refinishing in Newport

Are Newport floors too old to refinish?

Almost never. Age is a reason to avoid sanding, not a reason to avoid refinishing. Our process cleans, lightly abrades and recoats without removing the material that makes an old floor irreplaceable.

Do you charge extra for such a short trip?

There is no travel charge to Newport. At roughly five miles it is the shortest drive we make.

Can you work around a home we are still living in?

That is the normal case here. The dust-free process means you stay in the house, pets included, and walk on the floors the same evening.
