Hardwood Floors in Delaware City's Homes

Delaware City was built around the original Chesapeake and Delaware Canal terminus in the 1820s and 1830s, and the historic district along Clinton, Front and Washington streets still reads as a Federal-era river town. Homes here routinely date to the first half of the nineteenth century, with wide-plank heart pine and early oak that has been in place for close to two hundred years. Many have never been refinished at all, only waxed and rewaxed, which leaves a heavy buildup that responds far better to chemical stripping than to abrasion. Outside the district, the Fort DuPont area and newer development toward Route 9 add mid-century and contemporary housing with conventional strip flooring. The town's preservation ordinances make our non-destructive approach the practical default.
